Samanyanga is both a Shona and Tonga name for an elephant totem-in Tonga it's called Hamanyanga or Siamanyanga as the "Sa" means the same with "Ha" and "Sia" which means "owner of", whereas "Manyanga" means big horns in both languages. It is commonly used in former Mutapa kingdom territory areas including Manicaland, Mashonaland East, Mashonaland west along the Zambezi Valley and some parts southern province of Zambia. The name was popularised by Nyatsimba Mutota (founder of the Mutapa state) after he migrated from Great Zimbabwe to the Zambezi and integrated with the Tonga and Tavara who had the elephant totem-he changed his totem from Moyo (heart) to the mighty elephant.
